| Review for: Peter Vella Chardonnay |
 |
Excellent Value Daily Drinker, Jul 22, 2004

I know -- boxed wines are a big joke among wine connoiseurs -- akin to Velveeta among cheese connoiseurs. I have even perused a web site that gripes about the non-standard grapes used in these wines. My girlfriend and I do our best to be wine snobs, but we have been trying to cut down on expenses lately, and have been experimenting with boxed wines as a lower-cost day-to-day drink.
After trying several brands and varieties of boxed wine, I must admit I was pleasantly surprised with the taste of this Chardonnay, given it's price point. We have tried countless "cheap" white wines in the sub-$10 price point, and they all tend to come out either too sweet or like vinegar. Not the Vella! As compared with those "cheap" bottles, the boxed Vella has a relatively dry, nice flavor, and the boxed-technology guarantees a fresh (non-vinegar) consistency to the very last glass. For under $20, you can't beat the value of 5 liters of wine that stays fresh, and that can be enjoyed by the glass without worry of it going bad.
My only complaint is that the Kroger at which I purchased this wine (one of their fancy stores) sells it for over $16, whereas all the reviews I have read indicate it is supposed to be priced at under $10. I think we got ripped off by buying it in a snooty part of Houston.
